Guide to Cyber Essentials

Image title

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed scheme to help organisations protect themselves against common online threats. They offer cyber security certification to help guard against cyber attacks. In order to acquire this, a system must be proven to meet several security requirements, focussing on firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection and patch management.

This certification therefore gives peace of mind that defences will block the vast majority of cyber attacks, including hacking, phishing and password guessing.

Why is cyber security important?

Cyber security is the protection of system hardware, software and data. This protection is important to maintain confidentiality and integrity of data and IT systems. Guarding against common threats not only protects these data and IT systems, but prevents them from being marked as a target for more in-depth attacks.

Without adequate cyber security measures, valuable data can be stolen or corrupted and IT systems can be damaged, often irreparably. For businesses this can have huge financial and reputational consequences. Cyber security is also a very important part of GDPR compliance, as it is critical in ensuring the privacy of individuals and protection of personal data.
